Aadhi Purana

Aadhi Purana

Adi Purana was composed by Jinasena (a Digambara Monk) as a Sanskrit poem praising the life of first Tirthankara, Rishabhanatha. According to Jain tradition, it was composed in 9th century CE. The work focusses in his own unique style the pilgrimage of a soul to perfection and attainment of mukti. In the work, the struggle for power and control over the entire world of two brothers Bharata and Bahubali, sons of Rishabhadeva. While Bahubali wins, he renounces the worldly pursuits in favor of his brother. Many Jaina Puranas of the Middle Ages found a role model in this work.
The Puranic tradition in the country holds a significant antiquity, particularly in Brahmanical literature where Puranas are highly esteemed. Notably, the Bhagavata Purana acknowledges Rsabhadeva as one of the incarnations of Vishnu. In Jainism, a parallel tradition exists with several Puranas, some dating back to early periods. Unlike Brahmanical Puranas attributed to the sage Vyasa, Jaina Puranas were composed by different respected authors at various times. One noteworthy Jaina Purana is the Adi Purana by Jinasena, claimed to belong to the ninth century AD. This work extensively covers the life story of Lord Rsabhadeva, his ten incarnations, and provides life sketches of Bharata and Bahubali. Beyond being an essential Purana, it stands as a Mahakavya of remarkable poetic excellence, a religious scripture, and a political composition. It serves as a code of conduct for both the Jaina clergy and the common man. The Adi Purana delves into the study of ancient Jaina traditions, culture, history, and the geography of the country. It stands as a testament to the genesis and evolution of the human race, offering classifications into different classes. This composition serves as a comprehensive reflection of ancient customs and traditions, shedding light on the way of life of the Jaina faith's followers. An English version of this work is expected to captivate readers, both in the country and abroad. While every effort has been made to render the work accurately into English, it is acknowledged that there may be some shortcomings, and the learned readers are kindly requested to overlook any such minor imperfections.
