Maharashtra Revolutionizes Healthcare: Free Treatment for All Citizens

In a groundbreaking development aimed at enhancing the accessibility and affordability of healthcare services, the Maharashtra government has unveiled plans to offer free treatment and screening tests at all 2,418 public hospitals across the region, starting from August 15. The announcement was initially made by Health Minister Tanaji Sawant on August 3, with a subsequent government resolution issued over the weekend to provide a comprehensive outline of the scope and provisions of this transformative policy. Under this new framework, an array of medical services will be rendered free of charge, including outpatient department (OPD) registration, various laboratory tests, and essential screenings such as ECG, X-ray, and CT scans. Furthermore, to ensure patients' well-being, hospitals are mandated to procure necessary medications locally and supply them to patients without any additional cost. The policy also extends its benevolence to inpatients, eliminating the financial burden during the discharge process. Approximately 25.5 million individuals rely on public hospitals in Maharashtra for medical aid. It is noteworthy, however, that the policy's scope will not encompass hospitals and medical colleges under the medical education department. He stressed that officials have been instructed to execute the provision of free treatment at district hospitals, rural hospitals, and primary healthcare centers. Patients seeking treatment are required to present a valid government-issued identification card during registration.
